CAST: Govinda, Karisma Kapoor.DIRECTION: David Dhawan. |
This
is the seventh film form the David Dhawan-Govinda team. Taaqatvar, Swarg,
Aankhen, Shola aur Shabnam, Raja Babu, Coolie No. 1 and Saajan Chale Sasural
were the previous films together and with the exception of the first, Taaqatvar,
all the others have done exceptionally well. No wonder distributors and
exhibitors are expecting another bumper from the duo. And if Hero No. 1
hits the bull’s eye, the pair will make history.
This is the first time David has moved out of India to shoot his comic caper. Right from the first boy-meets-girl encounter in a London college, you’re taken on a three hour trip round some of the world’s most picturesque cities. London, Paris, Switzerland … it’s a veritable feast for your eyes.
Hero No. 1 is your usual love story with a difference. Two collegians meet and Cupid strikes almost immediately. After the inevitable running around England’s conifers, the hero tells his family that he’s met the lady of his dreams. Papa Kader Khan is delighted and so is his grand father-in-law-to-be Paresh Rawal. But when Kader Khan is on the way to meet his bahu’s dadaji a car speeds past and sprays kichad on his spotless clothes. He’s enraged, more so when he realises that the culprit is his son’s in-law-to-be. There’s a heated debate following which the young lovers are told that they can never get together .. not in this life.
Our Hero No. 1 however is unfazed by the threat. He is prepared to enter his beloved’s household as a lowly servant and with his engaging ways soon wins over everyone including the khadoos dadaji.
Karisma plays Govinda’s lady love but, interestingly, while their previous films usually centered around them, this time the stars share the spotlight with a host of other characters. Besides Kader Khan and Paresh Rawal, himamni Shivpuri, Tiku Talsania, Rakesh Bedi and Rita Bhaduri play important roles.
- Screen Feb 21, 1997.
